Less than a month since the start of the fall semester, universities continue to announce offers and discounted tuition to ensure retention of students, encourage obtaining the title and avoid delays.

This week, St. Norbert College and Pacific Lutheran University announced semesters of free tuition and programs of one year for returning and new students.

St. Norbert, a small liberal arts college in De Pere, Wis., Released its ninth program free half promise on Monday to pay tuition for eligible students to complete their degree in their ninth semester. Eligible students must have completed eight semesters of college education at St. Norbert or elsewhere, and must be registered and successfully complete a minimum of 12 credits each semester during the academic year 2020-21.

The goal of the program to encourage students to continue their education through the next academic year, said St. Norbert President Brian Bruess. The university also hopes the program will keep students involved on track to graduate in nine semesters.

"In order to maintain our commitment to a residential education, liberal arts and our firm commitment to ensure that students this program ninth semester so graduate in four years, [we believe] that motivate be recorded continuously, "Bruess said.

is expected that the program will appeal to students who wish to have more uninterrupted time in the campus theater, athletics or study opportunities abroad. He also thinks that could ease concerns of students who can not take a full course during the academic year 2020-21, health, financial or other reasons.

Bruess spoke about a recent conversation he'd had with the family of the student. They own a business and may need to call in the student work, in addition to their schoolwork.

"The family business is struggling to hire people from the staff. So the family is worried that they can not keep the business, "Bruess said. "This student might need, rather than 16 or 18 credits, take one or two fewer classes. This then gives the assurance that 'Look, I can do that at no cost, so I can do what is right for my family, and I can do what's right for me.' "

Does the program does not cover room and board and other fees. Participating students must submit an application for federal financial aid and guarantee waiver four-year graduation from college. Applications for the program are due on October 1.

Bruess said he had received positive feedback from the community, but it is too early to say how many students participate in the program. He said the decision to offer the ninth semester was not a financial, and St. Norbert College is in good financial health and has met its enrollment targets for the fall.

"The way I look at it financially is that if a student graduates on time, which is more important," he said. "So if college waiver of tuition revenue, we are willing to make that investment."

Pacific Lutheran gives students a year with no additional fee on campus through its program PLUS Year, debuted on Monday. All returning students and incoming calls, regardless of the class year will be eligible to turn in a fifth year without cost after enrollment projected date of graduation.

The aim of the program, according to the president of Pacific Lutheran Allan Belton is to ensure that all students receive four-year liberal arts quality experiences on campus.

"We came up that we really wanted to focus on giving students time to think about what it means coming to them and the ability to get the full experience of four years, this year" Belton said.

to the program like St. Norbert, Pacific Lutheran students must be enrolled in the 2020-21 academic year to be eligible for a "plus" year. During that extra year, students will be able to study abroad, participate in joint theater and music, and play sports if they are eligible.

Belton is not worried about the financial impact of the program.

"When you think of the vast majority of students who will take advantage of this opportunity would not have been here for the fifth year anyway, so it's effective does not really cost him the college entrance, "Belton said. "We're going to have to make sure we have the appropriate level of resources for faculty and staff resources to support students that stick longer. So it's really, from our point of view, the only dollar cost of the program. "

Pacific Lutheran program will not cover room and board fees. Both Pacific Lutheran and St. Norbert can bring some additional income housing and food for students who choose to participate in the programs.

Belton said the response from parents and students has been positive.

"We know that this will not be the academic year any student imagined, so give them time to stop and think about how you can make the most out of your time here is really what we hope to do . "
