They are composed of a young man and a young woman from each state, the district of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and the American families living abroad, as well as 15 elected in general, 20 academics in the arts and 20 academics in professional and technical education.

created in 1964, the United States presidential academic program has honored more than 7,900 of the country's highest performance. The program was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in visual, literary and scenic arts. In 2015, the program was extended again to recognize students who demonstrate capacity and achievement in the fields of professional and technical education.
