Declaration of the Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in Florida's newly signed state legislation March 28, 2022 Contact: Press Office, (202) 401-1576, Press@ed.gov
  • The Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, today published the following statement in response to rights of the parents of the Legislature of the Florida Legislature in the signing of the Law:

"By signing this bill, Governor Desantis has chosen to aiming some Florida more students and families Vulnerable, all while under the costume of "Parent Rights". Do not make mistake: this is a part of a disturbing and dangerous trend throughout the country of legislation aimed at LGBTQI + students, educators and individuals. This reaches in a time when we meet lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioned students are from three to cuatr or times more likely than students who are not LGBTQI + to inform experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, despair and even self-steering, not by those who are but due to hostility directed at them. I have spoken with parents and families in Florida and have always been told that this legislation does not represent them or what they represent. Instead of telling some students or families, it is not good to be who they are, our department is fighting for dignity and the opportunity for each student and family. We will continue to prioritize the billions of dollars from US rescue plan funds in schools and classrooms across the country to support the mental and academic health needs of students, educators and families. And, we will be monitoring this law on implementation to assess whether violating the Federal Civil Rights Law. As always, any student who believes that he is experiencing discrimination, including harassment, at school or any parent who is concerned that about his son who experienced discrimination may file a complaint with our office for civil rights.
